So What’s This IoT Stuff Anyway?

If you read my previous blog series on Arduino, you know that I LOVE it.

After all, I built an entire business about it and am eternally grateful that Arduino made getting started with electronics and coding a breeze.

(In case you missed that previous series, you can see them here: What is Arduino, What can you do with Arduino, What’s better Arduino or Raspberry Pi, Can you sell a product with an Arduino inside).

But here’s the thing, at some point, you will start to out grow it in terms of memory, I/O, speed and most importantly the way it communicates with the real world.

As your skills progress you’ll want to push the limits controlling and communicating with other devices which are NOT connected directly to your Arduino.

How do you do that? Via Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi.

Enter the Internet of Things (IoT)

In the early 2000’s companies from around the globe knew that there would be an EXPLOSION in terms of needing a way of giving devices a way to talk with one another, seamlessly and wirelessly.

And so just about every chip manufacturer on the planet started to develop small, wireless chip-sets that could be added to give this expanded capability.

Soon the world was flooded with “small-ish” modules that you could strap to your Arduino Uno or Nano.

HC-06 bluetooth Module

For example check out this Bluetooth module above (HC-06) which effortlessly gives the ability to speak via Bluetooth to things like your phone, sensors or anything else that speak Bluetooth.

Or the ever popular ESP-01 module which instantly gave your Arduino a Wifi voice.

But these modules are kinda cumbersome to work with, and so, Arduino began to develop an absolute FLEET of WiFi/Bluetooth capable products which actually integrate all of this into one tiny board.

They now have the Arduino R4 which is the same form factor as the Original Arduino Uno but it now has Bluetooth and WiFi built in!

In fact, A LOT of companies started to do this very same thing and it ushered in an entirely new realm of electronics called IoT or Internet of Things!

You may not realize this, but IoT is literally everywhere now, from your washer machine notifying you via an app that the laundry is done, do your refrigerators internal camera which allows you to peak inside of it while your shopping to see if you have butter.

IoT is EVERYWHERE!

And there are a TON of different IoT modules that you can choose from but one of them in particular is my personal favorite!

Which board is it you ask?

None other than the ever popular ESP32 DO IT dev kit from Espressif!

This board is 15X faster than a traditional Arduino Uno/nano, has built in WiFi & Bluetooth and even has the capability to communicate with other ESP32’s over its own internal WiFi network called ESPNOW! (More on this in a future blog post).

Yup, even if this thing is sprinkled around your farm, without a WiFi signal in spitting distance, these little guys can create their own internal WiFi network allowing them to communicate with one another effortlessly .

AND, they are only around $10 bucks each!

Mind. Blown…
